“Absolutely no way”- Pundit says Liverpool must have backup solution to Romeo Lavia and Moises Caicedo

Danny Murphy confident Liverpool have a backup solution ready after missing out on Romeo Lavia and Moises Caicedo

As per his column for the BBC, former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy is confident that the club has a backup plan ready after losing out on the transfer of Romeo Lavia and Moises Caicedo to Chelsea.

After agreeing on a £111m bid with Brighton for Caicedo, Liverpool could not close the deal out for the Ecuadorian as he wanted to go to Chelsea.

The Reds had a summer long interest in Lavia. However, they were hesitant in meeting Southampton’s demand of £50m to sign the Belgian international.

After seeing the third bid for the 19-year-old rejected by the Championship side, the club did all that work on Caicedo which ultimately turned out to be a waste.

All in all, Liverpool have made a fool out of themselves. Had they made a £50m bid for Lavia weeks ago, the Belgian would have been our player because he initially wanted to come to Anfield.

Now, we are in a situation where the club must find ways to make the remaining 17 days of the window count. Murphy believes they have a backup plan ready. Here’s an excerpt from his piece in the BBC:

“There is absolutely no way Liverpool can go through the season with what they have now in midfield, so someone will be coming through the door. We will just have to wait and see who it is.

“I’d be amazed if there wasn’t one [backup plan].”

The problem with the failed Caicedo transfer is the fact that the whole world knows Liverpool are capable of spending £100m+ on a player.

It also showed the club’s desperation because the current squad does not have an out-and-out defensive midfielder.

Alexis Mac Allister started there against Chelsea and had a decent game. But, we all know the Argentinian is better as a number eight with the freedom to create chances or score goals in the final third.

So, let’s not reduce the effectiveness of such a good player because of the club’s incompetence. It is time to get the act together and get players over the line soon!
