Jurgen Klopp has offered his perspective on the recent interview by Jordan Henderson, shedding light on the discussions that took place between them before Henderson’s departure from Liverpool earlier this summer.
In the interview, Henderson openly discussed his departure from Liverpool, citing his desire for regular playing time as a key factor. Klopp, when asked about the interview, revealed that he initially hadn’t read it but later did so to form his own opinion. At Al Ettifaq, Hendo has playing time as well as the guidance of former Red Steven Gerrard. Speaking of the interview, here is what Klopp said via ECHO:
“I didn’t read interview at first, then read it so I can make my own opinion, Hendo said the truth. That’s how it was. We had talks, I told him I wanted him to stay but we talked about maybe not playing regularly.
“I cannot tell a player they can have 50 games because I don’t know that. In our relationship, I thought it was important we speak about ‘what happens if’. Hendo, I love him but he was not great when they didn’t play, Milner and Lucas were the same. So we talk about that now.”
Klopp acknowledged that Henderson’s comments reflected the truth of their conversations. He expressed his love for Hendo but also highlighted the importance of discussing the possibility of reduced playing time due to the competitive nature of the squad.
The Liverpool manager emphasized that he couldn’t guarantee any player a specific number of games since it depends on various factors. He stressed the need for honesty and open discussions in their relationship, especially regarding the challenging topic of reduced playing time.
Klopp mentioned that Henderson, like other experienced players such as James Milner and Lucas Leiva, found it challenging when they weren’t in the starting lineup. These conversations allowed them to address these concerns and clarify their roles within the team.
Regarding Henderson’s perception that Klopp didn’t want him at the club, Klopp clarified that it wasn’t the case. He stated that if he had assured Henderson that he would be the main man, the former skipper might have chosen to stay. However, given the uncertainty of playing time, it was better for both parties that the former Sunderland man moved on.
Klopp concluded by emphasizing that there is no ill will between him and Henderson. He praised Henderson for his leadership as the captain of the best Liverpool team in the Premier League era, highlighting the respect and admiration he holds for the departing midfielder.
In Klopp’s eyes, the decision for Henderson to continue his career elsewhere was made with mutual respect and understanding. The manager’s words reflect the deep respect and fondness he holds for Henderson, who played a pivotal role in Liverpool’s recent successes.
