Liverpool star Mohamed Salah reveals contract extension intricacies in the summer of 2022

A recent Harvard Business School study has shed light on the intricate contract negotiations that took place between Liverpool and Mohamed Salah last year. This study has revealed previously undisclosed details of the negotiations, and Salah himself shared the study’s statement on his social media, providing Liverpool fans with a deeper understanding of the process.

At that time, Salah was entering the final year of his contract with Liverpool, presenting a crucial decision point for his future – whether to commit to a new deal or explore other options. Coming off an exceptional season in which he scored 31 goals across all competitions and helped Liverpool secure two trophies, it was clear that both the club and the player were keen on continuing their partnership.

The negotiations between Salah and Liverpool were far from straightforward, as indicated by a phone call Salah had with his lawyer and advisor, Ramy Abbas Issa, in June 2022. During this call, Salah was informed that an agreement on a new contract seemed uncertain, with Liverpool’s latest offer falling significantly short of their expectations. Here is Mo’s post on X (Formerly Twitter)

The Harvard Business School study highlights Salah’s unwavering trust in Abbas, emphasizing their partnership. Salah was quoted as saying, “We are partners. I know he will always do what is best for me.”

Despite his desire to stay at Liverpool, Salah emphasized that the club needed to demonstrate their commitment to him as well. This prompted Salah and Abbas to strategize and formulate a counteroffer before reengaging in discussions with Liverpool.

Mo Salah Running Down The Wing

Their strategic approach yielded results, as in early July, Mohamed signed a new contract, extending his stay at Anfield until 2025 (Transfermarkt). This decision marked the end of the possibility of Salah running down his contract and leaving for free in 2023. Additionally, Salah secured his status as Liverpool’s highest-paid player ever, with weekly wages approaching £400,000.

Even after signing his new contract, Salah continued to perform at an exceptional level for Liverpool during a challenging campaign. He reached the 30-goal mark once again, showcasing his unwavering commitment to the club.

During the recent transfer window, Salah’s loyalty to Liverpool was put to the test when Saudi Arabian club Al-Ittihad made a staggering £215m offer for him. Despite speculation and claims from others that he was ready to leave, Salah remained at Anfield as Liverpool rebuffed the bid.

Salah’s ability to stay focused amid such speculation is a testament to his professionalism and dedication. On the pitch, he has continued to shine, contributing three goals and four assists in Liverpool’s opening six league games of the season. This has propelled Liverpool into second place in the Premier League, just two points behind leaders Manchester City.
