Stephen Warnock praises Liverpool forward Darwin Núñez after the victory over West Ham United

BBC pundit and former Liverpool player Stephen Warnock praised Liverpool’s performance against West Ham United and lauded Darwin Núñez’s display of quality while speaking on BBC Radio 5 live.

Liverpool won the Premier League game 3-1 against The Hammers at Anfield. The score was level at 1-1 after 45 minutes as West Ham’s Jarrod Bowen cancelled out Mohamed Salah‘s penalty goal.

Núñez missed a great opportunity in the 53rd minute but redeemed himself with a cheeky finish in the 60th minute. Diogo Jota secured three points for the Merseyside club in the 85th minute of the game.

Warnock praised the quality performance of Liverpool players especially Núñez while speaking on Radio 5 live. He said:

“They were tested today at times by West Ham and they dealt with that test, clinically in front of goal. They got the job done and that was the most important thing. Some quality moments especially from Darwin Nunez who has found it difficult so far in his Liverpool career but showed today what he is capable of.”

Liverpool signed Núñez from Benfica for £85m during the summer transfer window of 2022. The 24-year-old became the most expensive player in the club’s history and carried high expectations due to the transfer fee.

The Reds have gained a reputation for doing astute business when they decide to throw big money on a player. Likes of Alisson and Virgil van Dijk are the prime examples of Liverpool getting their big transfer spot on.

Núñez experienced momentary misjudgment that resulted in a red card against Crystal Palace and suffered from nagging injuries during his first season. However, the Uruguayan international showed glimpses of what he is all about which kept the fans’ hopes up. Núñez played 42 games in his first season at Liverpool, contributing to 15 goals and four assists. The Uruguayan international’s contribution is still far better than what many pundits and football fans made it out to be.

The 24-year-old has started the current season sensationally, getting four goals and two assists in seven appearances.

We have seen that Núñez is a lot more than just goals and assists. He is a constant creator of chaos in opposition defence and his movements give a lot of space for his teammates to exploit. Núñez is not just a goalscoring threat, his presence and physical prowess gives a psychological edge to the Liverpool team whenever he is on the field.
