Neil Jones reveals prolonged Liverpool interest in Jarrod Bowen and its potential implications

Journalist Neil Jones wrote in his exclusive column for the Daily Briefing about Liverpool’s interest in West Ham United winger Jarrod Bowen makes sense but it seems unlikely given the age of the player.

The Hammers signed Bowen from Hull City for £20m-plus deal in the 2020 January transfer window. The 26-year-old has been a consistent performer for West Ham over the years.

Bowen scored a brave header against Liverpool in West Ham’s 3-1 loss at Anfield on Sunday. The Englishman has scored some crucial goals including the winning goal against Fiorentina in the 2023 UEFA Europa Conference League final. His goal helped West Ham clinch their first trophy in 43 years.

Jones explained that Bowen would be a sensible choice for Liverpool to replace the Egyptian legend, Mohamed Salah. He wrote:

“Jarrod Bowen impressed with a goal for West Ham against Liverpool at the weekend, and he is a player Liverpool admire, and have done for some time. He’s certainly an option worth considering given the doubts over Mo Salah’s long-term future.”

The Daily Mail reported that the Saudi club Al-Ittihad were ready to pay £200m for the Liverpool legend. It is likely that the Saudi Arabian clubs will return for the Egyptian in the next summer transfer window.

The 31-year-old is one of the most influential figures in professional football and Saudi Arabia have a lot to gain from his goodwill and services.

Jones further wrote about Bowen’s chances to join Liverpool as a replacement for the Egyptian maestro, given his age. He added:

“However, he’ll be 27 in January, and while that’s hardly ancient, I would expect the Reds to be targeting players a little younger, with a little more potential and longevity at the top level. Bowen is a fine player, and may well have a move to a top-six club in him, but I suspect the ship has sailed as far as Liverpool are concerned.”

The Hammer forward, known for his fantastic left foot, operates as a right-winger, excelling in exploiting spaces and scoring goals. Bowen is also a very clever passer of the ball with great anticipation and off-the-ball movements.

The 26-year-old has contributed 44 goals and 32 assists for West Ham in 164 appearances in all competitions so far, which is a great return. Bowen can produce more in a team where he can be fed with more critical chances than what he gets at the London club.

We think Jones is spot on about Liverpool targeting a younger replacement for Salah. Bowen has the experience and the quality but his age and the potentially high price tag demand from West Ham makes him an unlikely candidate. The Reds will definitely be in the market to find someone who can not only serve the club for the long haul but can also make an instant impact.
