Harry Redknapp compares Alexis Mac Allister to Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard
Harry Redknapp believes that Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has found a suitable successor to Steven Gerrard in Alexis Mac Allister. Mac Allister scored a spectacular goal against Sheffield United which reminded many fans and pundits of a vintage Gerrard goal.
The 25-year-old has played a pivotal role for Liverpool since the start of the current season, playing in different roles. He has played as a number six, a number eight and number 10 in the midfield, as a regular starter.
Mac Allister started the season in the number six role due to the lack of defensive midfielders in the squad. New signing Wataru Endo required time to adapt to the pace of the Premier League and the new tactical philosophy.
Mac Allister played alongside Endo once the Japanese captain fully adapted to the new league, building a formidable midfield partnership. Liverpool signed Mac Allister from Brighton & Hove Albion during the summer for just £35 million, a bargain deal.
Players who are anywhere near the calibre of the Argentine would easily cost around £100 million in the inflated market. Nevertheless, Liverpool used their shrewd tactics and moved early to secure the World Cup winner before any potential competitor arrived.
Redknapp told BetVictor (h/t Liverpool Echo) that Klopp has already signed a worthy successor to Gerrard in Mac Allister. He said:
“Alexis Mac Allister has been outstanding recently – he’s been as good as anyone in the league. That goal against Sheffield United during the week was like a vintage Steven Gerrard strike! I know the lad is a World Cup winner, but I don’t think people realize just how good he is.”
Mac Allister has performed beyond the expectations of anyone, showcasing his class and elegance on the ball throughout this season. Furthermore, he has contributed immensely in the defensive phases and thrived as a defensive midfielder while shielding the Liverpool defence.
