Dominik Szoboszlai shares what Steven Gerrard messaged him when he first joined Liverpool

Dominik Szoboszlai joined Liverpool from RB Leipzig for a cost of $76 million (£60 million/€70 million) last summer. The Hungary captain recounted what Steven Gerrard told him after joining the Reds.

When Szoboszlai assumed the role of Liverpool’s No. 8 last summer, there were high expectations. It is fair to say that the previous occupant of the number, Naby Keita, has failed to meet those expectations since his arrival in 2018.

Upon joining from RB Leipzig, the Hungarian skipper made it clear that he wanted to take on this responsibility. So far, the 23-year-old appears to have the potential to make a significant impact for Liverpool if he can improve his consistency in front of goal.

Steven Gerrard’s message to Szoboszlai

The 23-year-old has even previously revealed that he has a tattoo of a quote from Liverpool’s former captain on his arm. And now, Szoboszlai has admitted that he did also receive a text from Gerrard after moving to Anfield.

It’s definitely a prestigious number for any club. However, given Keita’s struggles following his decision to inherit Gerrard’s legacy, you couldn’t blame the Hungarian for feeling some pressure. Gerrard likely recognized that Szoboszlai might need some guidance to navigate the weight of wearing such an iconic number. He told Stadium Astro via Youtube:

“He just text me if I need any help or anything he can help with in Liverpool, like find houses or whatever, then I could text him.”

“At the beginning when I signed he just said if I needed anything I should let him know but the club helps me with everything. If I would need anything I would text him!”

Some might argue that the Hungary captain has slightly lowered his performance standards since returning from injury in February. There’s no denying that Szoboszlai remains an integral player for Liverpool and will continue to be for years to come.

However, there’s a sense of expectation for more from him at the moment. Sunday’s match against Manchester United further highlighted this. He arguably should have ended the game with a brace.

It will be intriguing to see how he fits in under a different manager next season, as Jurgen Klopp is leaving Anfield. However, given his quality, there should still be a significant role for him in the team.
