Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes hopes Sporting Lisbon manager Ruben Amorim stays at the club amid the interest from Liverpool

Bruno Fernandes believes Sporting Lisbon manager Ruben Amorim will be a success at Liverpool, wishing he would stay in Portugal. Amorim joined Sporting CP right after Fernandes left the club to join Manchester United in January during the 2019-2020 season.

Sporting CP’s appointment of Amorim brought several changes and a culture of success and development of young talents. The 39-year-old guided the Portuguese club to their first Liga Portugal title in 19 years during his first full season.

He also achieved Taca da Liga twice and Supertaca Candido de Oliveira in 2021 since joining Sporting CP. The former Portugal international established Sporting CP as one of the dominant clubs in Portugal under his regime.

Before Amorim, Portugal had Benfica and Porto as the two dominant clubs in the Liga Portugal for many years. Currently, Sporting CP are again leading the Liga Portugal with a four-point advantage on Benfica and a game in hand.

Furthermore, they defeated Benfica in the Taca de Portugal semi-finals to reach the final of that tournament once again. Amorim’s success has brought a steep rise to his reputation as well as the reputation of the Portuguese club.

Speaking to Portuguese media last month (h/t Liverpool Echo), Fernandes hopes that Amorim does not join Liverpool, given his success. He said:

“If he [Amorim] really takes the next step – I hope he stays at Sporting – but if he takes the next step, I think all the qualities are there to be able to succeed in English, French, or Spanish football. Obviously, we know that the Premier League is probably the most desired. The qualities [to succeed in England] are there and he has everything to take the next step, in my opinion. But it will depend on the clubs, the directors, whether they want to pay Sporting’s release clause or not.”

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp created a culture and mentality within the club that brought success and development of youngsters. Amorim values the same philosophy and culture, making him a worthy successor to Klopp.
