Liverpool star Adrian was never meant to be a starter but his heroics in the 2019 UEFA Super Cup will be remembered, earning him a mention in the club’s illustrious history books.

The Spaniard has had his ups and downs in a Red jersey but has more often than not proved himself to be a reliable third-choice goalkeeper and an experienced presence in the dressing room. With Alisson Becker and now Caoimhin Kelleher ahead of him in the Anfield pecking order, the time is ripe for Adrian to call it quits on his five-year stay on Merseyside.

At 37, the shot-stopper still could have had a future at Liverpool had he opted to sign a new contract. However, he appears to be on his way back to Spain and will now begin a new chapter in what has been a long and ultimately successful career in the beautiful game.

In a heartfelt message on his official Instagram page, Adrian bid the fans goodbye and looked back on the honour that was afforded to him in being selected to play for Liverpool.

He considers his stay at Liverpool a beautiful and successful one and has certainly taken to the club’s ethos and traditions. While it might not always have been pretty, one cannot claim that Adrian did not understand what it meant to represent the club.

Adrian’s time will unfortunately also be remembered for his error against Atletico Madrid in 2020. Unfortunately while playing for a club such as ours, the highs are monumental while the lows are severely heartbreaking. But then, Adrian can still leave with his head held high and look back to his time at Anfield with fondness.

The 37-year-old leaves the club having won the Premier League title, the Carabao Cup, the FIFA Club World Cup and most importantly the UEFA Super Cup. Given his long and difficult journey as a player, it is fair to say that the Spaniard found the success he deserved on Merseyside. Vamos Adrian.

With Adrian now moving on, Liverpool have opened up another spot for a foreign player on their roster. This should give Edwards and Co. leeway when it comes to landing players this summer. An era is coming to an end at Anfield but thankfully another is being built, slowly and steadily.
