Liverpool hero Darwin Nunez highlights his “never give up” attitude and eagerness to build upon his match-winning performance against Brentford. The Reds beat the Bees 0-2 in the away Premier League game after Nunez scored two spectacularly late extra-time goals.
Liverpool’s attack have struggled with finishing as a whole recently while the Uruguayan has faced criticism throughout the current season. The 25-year-old has faced judgment due to the level where Liverpool operates and the transfer fee they spent on Nunez.
Furthermore, legendary forward Mohamed Salah along with left-wing attackers Cody Gakpo and Luis Diaz have enjoyed a fantastic season’s start. At the same time, Diogo Jota has contributed with crucial goals despite his continuous struggle with fitness at the club.

The situation puts a lot of pressure on Nunez, who wears the famous number nine jersey at Liverpool right now. Despite his struggles, head coach Arne Slot has provided a fantastic assessment of the Uruguayan international while maintaining his faith in the forward.
Nunez repaid the faith that Slot has maintained by scoring two very crucial goals at this crucial stage for Liverpool. The Reds cannot afford to drop more points after suffering a series of unwanted draws in the Premier League recently.
Speaking in the post-match interview (via Liverpoolfc.com), Nunez highlighted his attitude and desire to build upon his Brentford performance for Liverpool. He said:
“I think you have to stay mentally strong, never give up. There are moments that are very difficult for us players – for me, it’s right now, but I never throw the towel in. I always carry on working in training. If I need to stay to practise more, I stay, to improve. I think the work that I do on the pitch to help the team, to defend as well, I think I’ve always done it well. But I haven’t scored goals and I know people look at that: the striker has to score goals.”
The 25-year-old further highlighted the faithful Liverpool fans and his family as the source of his motivation to succeed. He added:
“The truth is that I’m going through a rough patch and like I said before, I always stay focused on my job and I’m always going to give everything for Liverpool. It’s really important to keep my head up and to always say, ‘OK, I’ve got to work because I need to improve.’ And I stay strong with this mentality and with the support of my family and of course the fans, who are incredible. Now I have to keep on working. These two goals will definitely help to build my confidence. I’m very happy with the win for the team.”
Nunez has all the potential and environment to still succeed as a number nine under Slot at Liverpool. The Uruguay international has made 27 appearances in all competitions this season, scoring six goals and providing four assists. However, Nunez has only started 14 of those 27 games for Liverpool which adds to his limited contribution so far.
