Steve McManaman delivers verdict on Liverpool transfer target Saul Niguez
Liverpool legend Steve McManaman has shared his thoughts on Saul Niguez rumours. In his column for Horseracing.net (h/t Liverpool Echo), Mcmanaman wrote that the Atletico Madrid midfielder is a good player.
However, he believes that the Reds are well armoured in the middle of the park and do not need any fresh additions in the department.
“I’m not particularly bothered about that move if I’m being honest, though he is a really good central midfielder.
“They’ve got Henderson, Thiago and Fabinho. In addition to that, they have Oxlade-Chamberlain, Keita, Milner, Jones and then the kids looking to break through. So a central midfielder is not the priority.”
The BT Sport pundit does not even think that a replacement for Georginio Wijnaldum is needed.
“Everybody is obsessed with replacing Gini Wijnaldum but Liverpool have a plethora of midfielders. You just need them to stay fit.”
Do Liverpool need to replace Gini Wijnaldum?
Looking at the options in midfield, Liverpool are indeed well equipped. However, it could not be as easy as “stay fit” as McManaman says. Both Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keita have struggled with injuries. No sign suggests that both could not pick up another.

Wijnaldum was essential to the way Jurgen Klopp sets his Liverpool team-up. Someone like Saul can be a like-for-like replacement for the Dutchman at Anfield.
The 26-year-old Spaniard has been a prominent figure for Atletico Madrid over the years. However, the Daily Mail suggests that Saul could be up for sale after the arrival of Rodrigo de Paul to Atletico Madrid.
Whether Liverpool pounces or heeds McManaman’s advice of ‘don’t push for a midfielder’ remains to be seen.
