Nedum Onuoha is full of praise for Liverpool star Dominik Szoboszlai
One thing was certain when Liverpool triggered RB Leipzig’s release clause for Dominik Szoboszlai earlier this summer. The Reds’ midfield was surely going to see a transformation in terms of creativity. Under Jurgen Klopp in the last few years, the Merseysiders have focused a lot on workhorse midfielders and the trend first changed with Thiago Alcantara signing in the summer of 2020.
With Alexis Mac Allister, Wataru Endo, Ryan Gravenberch, Curtis Jones, Harvey Elliott, Stefan Bajcetic and Szoboszlai himself, the Reds have the right balance of creative midfielders in the middle of the park alongside engine midfielders who run up and down the pitch. Szobo is a hybrid between an engine and a creator and has been in absolutely top form for the Reds this season.
Winning Liverpool’s Player of the Month award for September, expectations were bound to increase coming into October, and the player has surely not disappointed. He has been an absolute cog in midfield for Jurgen Klopp, and it reflects in the results that we have overseen this month. Even against Nottingham Forest, Szoboszlai got two assists and put in a tremendous shift.
Speaking to the BBC Radio 5 Live’s Football Daily (h/t BBC) after Liverpool’s 3-0 win over Nottingham Forest at Anfield, former Premier League defender Nedum Onuoha was full of praise for Szoboszlai and here is what he had to say:
“Szoboszlai is such a good footballer – I can’t stress it enough. The way he and Alexis Mac Allister manipulate the ball with their passing and, as Jurgen Klopp said, the joy they have in playing football.”
“I wish it was infectious the way you could take their ability but instead we just have to watch them. [Szoboszlai] is so good and has been a great signing. It seems like the fans love him and as a neutral, you can only dream of having that sort of ability.”
In 13 appearances for the Reds across all competitions, he has two goals and as many assists. His performances, apart from the numbers, have been absolutely top notch and he fits into Liverpool’s style of play like a glove.
Midfield Maestro
Szoboszlai’s versatility is another aspect of his game that has won over fans and pundits alike. He can operate both as an engine in midfield, tirelessly covering the ground and winning back possession, and as a creator, threading incisive passes and unlocking opposition defences. This unique blend of attributes has been instrumental in Liverpool’s midfield evolution.
The chemistry between Szoboszlai and his fellow midfielders is certainly palpable on the pitch. The likes of Alexis Mac Allister among others have a deep understanding of each other’s movements, allowing for quick and precise exchanges that disrupt the opposition’s defensive shape.
This newfound fluidity in Liverpool’s midfield has added a layer of unpredictability and dynamism to their play. If all the gears click into place, Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool 2.0 could be a far better side than his previous title-winning Reds’ roster.
