Liverpool legend Steve McManaman wants Michael Edwards back at Liverpool irrespective of the role he is willing to accept
Steve McManaman wants former Liverpool sporting director Michael Edwards back at the club, regardless of the role he takes. Edwards served the Reds for a decade after joining the club in 2011 as a scout.
He earned internal promotions to become sporting director of the club and stayed in the position until Number 2021. The 44-year-old gained an immense reputation and earned the status of a cult hero at Liverpool for his impressive negotiation skills.
He supervised the signing of Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk, Alisson Becker, Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and many others. Liverpool achieved numerous trophies under the guidance of Edwards and the Reds’ manager Jurgen Klopp.
McManaman told Liverpool Echo that he has spoken to Edwards and believes that the former sporting director needs to return. He said:
“They should try and bring Michael back! Of course, they should. Funnily enough, I spoke to him the other day about it as well because he lives by me and I see him regularly. I don’t know in what capacity they would want to bring him back. I don’t know. I think Michael has moved on from just being a sporting director. He hasn’t said that to me personally, but he couldn’t just go back to the same role that he was doing for a long time.”
In January, the Reds manager Jurgen Klopp announced that he was leaving the club at the end of the season. He cited burnout as the reason for his departure, putting his mental and physical well-being over the stressful job.
Former sporting director Jorge Schmadtke departed from the club after the January transfer window. Liverpool would want to secure the sporting director role and the new successor for Klopp before implementing future plans.

The Reds are facing plenty of changes in backroom staff once Klopp leaves, ushering in a new era at the club. Nevertheless, they would want to continue the healthy culture that Klopp has created, balancing success with the development of young players.

Liverpool have operated shrewdly under Klopp’s reign and a lot of credit goes to the scouting system and sporting directors. The Reds would want personnel who have an understanding of the culture of the club and negotiation skills just like Edwards.
