Ian Wright backs Liverpool to beat Manchester City at Anfield

Ian Wright has thrown his support behind Liverpool in the upcoming clash against Manchester City, expressing his preference for a scenario where both teams lose, albeit in a humorous manner. Obviously, a draw would mean the best possible scenario for Wrighty’s very own Gunners.

With Liverpool leading the Premier League charts with 63 points from 27 games and City closely trailing with 62 points from the same number of matches, the upcoming encounter between the two heavyweights holds immense importance. As Arsenal also lurk closely behind in third place with 61 points, the outcome of the CityPool clash could potentially shape the destiny of the title.

Speaking on the Kelly and Wrighty Show, in his characteristic style, Wright kicked off the conversation with a cheeky proposition wanting both teams to lose. Here is what he had to say:

“I’ve just had a crazy thought. Can both of them lose? That came into my head. Can both lose for Arsenal please?”

“But no, you look at it from Liverpool’s point of view, is it at the Etihad? It’s at Anfield! Liverpool at this stage, I would fancy Liverpool, I would do.”

Ah, the eternal wish of every rival fan – to witness their competitors stumble and falter, paving the way for their own team’s ascent. While Wright’s plea for a double defeat might be wishful thinking, it certainly adds a whimsical touch to the heated debate surrounding the title race.

Let's not forget what transpired the last time Manchester City paid a visit to Anfield. We don't call Mohamed Salah 'King' for no reason.

City or the Reds?

But amidst the banter, Wright delves into the heart of the matter. With both teams neck and neck in the Premier League standings, separated by the slimmest of margins, the upcoming fixture looms large on the horizon. It’s a clash of titans, a battle for supremacy, and Wright just like the rest of the English football audience, is eagerly anticipating the spectacle.

Liverpool’s slender lead at the top of the table, coupled with City’s relentless pursuit, sets the stage for a thrilling encounter with far-reaching consequences. And with Arsenal lurking closely behind in third place, the outcome of this showdown could potentially tilt the balance of power in the title race.

But what sways Wright’s allegiance towards Liverpool? We all know that he, as he likes to call it, is a “closeted Liverpool fan“. But for real, it is Anfield. The iconic stadium, steeped in history and tradition, has long been a fortress for the Reds, where opposing teams tremble in the face of the deafening roar of the Kop. Bloody Leeds United, if it was not for them, our unbeaten run at the ground would’ve been much more spectacular.
