One of Liverpool’s best defenders could be out of the club in the January window. Mamadou Sakho, who at one time could not be dropped from the side, has not played at all this season and reports from Liverpool Echo suggest that the former PSG defender is all but certain to leave Merseyside.

The 26-year-old has had a chequered time with Liverpool ever since the arrival of Jurgen Klopp and the last straw seems to be his snapchat message where he accused the club of not telling the truth about his situation.

The French defender was also sent back from Liverpool’s preseason tour for breaking rules set by the German manager. And it seems that France is the getaway choice for the centre-back.

French paper, L’Equipe, suggests that the social media outburst was enough to make up the minds of the hierarchy at Anfield. It has been a tough time for the French defender and the paper also claims that Sakho will be sold in the summer.

It is believed that the Frenchman rejected many moves in the summer and the ability to not loan out Sakho has frustrated Klopp. Sakho, for his part, has been playing with the U23s all season and continues to be part of the side.

No place in the EFL Cup team

While many expected Klopp to make a few changes in the EFL Cup tie against Tottenham, Sakho was not in the starting line-up and didn’t feature in the game either. Klopp decided to play with a centre-back pairing of Lucas Leiva and Ragnar Klavan in the 2-1 victory.

When the German manager was asked if Sakho would be playing any part in the game, Klopp did not want to speak about the situation.

“You could have read it in English newspapers. I’ve said everything about this in my talk with Mama. There is nothing else to say about it.”

This does signal an end to Sakho’s time at the club.

A talented defender and one of the best at a time

Apart from his passing ability, no one doubted Sakho and his playing style at Liverpool. The 26-year-old always gave his all and was the best defender Liverpool had for years. That situation has changed drastically as the pairing of Dejan Lovren and Joel Matip have been exceptional since the start of the season.

It is a shame seeing such a talented player going to waste but there is no place for him in the side at the moment and selling him off in January does make sense. Hopefully, the deadlock between the two sides can end and Sakho will accept a move away to continue his senior career.

Liverpool would not make up the £18 million they paid for the player but they could still get a decent deal in the winter window.
