Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has scouted a number of players in the Bundesliga and even though he tried to sign a few in the winter window, he failed to do so. One of the players from that list, Emil Forsberg, was a big target for the Reds but he has now penned a new deal with his club RB Leipzig.

Many outlets had suggested that Klopp needed to splash out close to £20m for the player from the Bundesliga’s surprise package but a deal could not be concluded between the parties. Forsberg has been in great form for the newcomers and has scored five goals and provided eight assists in just 15 Bundesliga games this season.

His performances have taken due note and his club confirmed that the 25-year-old winger had indeed signed a new deal which will keep him at the club till 2022.

“Emil Forsberg has extended his contract at RB Leipzig by a further year until June 2022”.

The player too was pleased with the deal and he could be playing in the Champions League too next season, should Leipzig continue their form in the second half of the season.

“I am delighted. I feel right at home and very much appreciated. The club is ambitious and has huge potential. I want to contribute to continued success in the future.”

It seems that Liverpool will have to try again in the summer as the contract extension reportedly has large buyout clause and any club wanting to sign the talented winger will have to splash the cash.

Forsberg could have been the marquee signing for Klopp in the winter window as he seems to be a similar player to Sadio Mane. The Swede is known for his attacking ability but he does a lot of tracking back too and Leipzig too play a brand of counter-attacking football that Klopp is known for.

The lack of quality in the attack for the Reds certainly hurt then during the start of 2017 as they have only won one game so far. They have no wins in the Premier League and that has seen them slide down to fifth in the Premier League standings.

Forsberg did earlier state that he would be playing in the Champions League next season. And unless Liverpool arrest their dip in form and start winning, the Swedish winger could be playing for another club as the Reds stay out of Europe’s premier club competition for another season.
