Liverpool Face Bigger Problems In The Fight To Keep Out-of-contract Midfielder At Anfield

This may surprise some of you, but it is being reported that Spanish giants Real Madrid are looking at making a January move for Liverpool midfielder Emre Can. The latest reports in Italian outlet Corriere dello Sport (h/t talkSPORT) indicate that the Los Blancos are all set for a winter transfer window bid for the midfielder.

The German international’s current contract at Anfield expires at the end of the season. Despite numerous moves by the Reds to make him extend his stay, there are no indications from the player’s camp that the German international would extend his deal.

Even Jurgen Klopp has maintained that Can remains an important player in his squad, but it seems like the situation is out of his hands.

It was reported all through the summer that Italian giants Juventus were leading the race to sign the youngster and the club had confirmed their interest on a number of occasions as well. However, now, with Madrid entering the fray, it makes things all the more interesting.

I am not entirely sure how Can would fit into the sea of midfield options available for Zinedine Zidane, but the Spanish side is keen to add a central midfielder to his squad. With his deal expiring next summer, Can is free to sign a pre-contract deal with non-English clubs in January, which could mean a tussle between Juventus and Madrid.

So what about Liverpool? The 23-year-old has already indicated that his reluctance to sign a new deal with the Reds has nothing to do with money and that he is only looking at the game time and the club’s ambitions to decide his next move.

He has started 10 of the 15 Premier League games this season to go with four Champions League matches which mean he is far from being a bit-part player at the club.

Should the club sell him in January and cut the losses? There is a strong case to do that, but I doubt if the Reds do that, it may not reward them in footballing terms. I may be alone and there could be many fans who think otherwise.

What do you say?
