Liverpool had to deal with the good and the bad in the world of football as they signed Virgil van Dijk, making him the most expensive defender in the world before losing Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona. Both transfers could have happened in the summer but the deals finally took place in the winter window.
Our next game is against Manchester City and the 5-0 loss at the Etihad will remain in our minds as that is one of the two games we have lost in the Premier League this season. In our previous game, it took a Van Dijk header to seal the victory against bitter rivals Everton in the FA Cup third round and hopefully the defender will have another great game to hand the Manchester club their first loss of the Premier League season.
City played in the FA Cup and also in the midweek as they registered wins in both games and hopefully, they will be a little tired when they face us at Anfield.
Mohamed Salah should be fit enough to face Manchester City while we should see the return of Jordan Henderson to the starting XI after he missed out on the FA Cup tie.
Alberto Moreno and Daniel Sturridge are the two other players who might be fit for the game but in all probability, they won’t be on the bench as we look to keep them fresh for the remainder of the campaign.
Mignolet was given a break in the FA Cup but he should return to the side and hopefully, he will have a good game too.
It was tough to decide between Joe Gomez and Trent but the youngster’s pace might just be the reason why Jurgen Klopp could decide to start him in place of Gomez.
Virgil van Dijk (CB)
There is no way we cannot start Van Dijk in the back four. The Dutchman had a dream debut and will look to add another winning goal for us against City.
Joel Matip (CB)
Matip is the other defender who could start, even though Ragnar Klavan has been doing pretty well this season.
Andrew Robertson (LB)
With Moreno still a doubt for this fixture, we have to continue with Robertson, who has done a stellar job for us since returning to the side.
Emre Can (CM)
Can seems a goner in the next transfer window but we still should play him as he provides a lot of bite to our midfield.
Georginio Wijnaldum (CM)
Wijnaldum is another player who is looking for a good game and maybe the Dutch midfielder will display his best against the Manchester side.
Jordan Henderson (CM)
The captain should be fit enough to start the game. He will have to be at his best for sure.
Sadio Mane (LW)
Mane has been a bit off this season, especially after the red card he got in the reverse fixture this season. The former Southampton man will be looking to make amends and he could be the difference maker in this clash.
Salah has a bit of a knock but he has to start in the game if we are to get all three points against Guardiola’s side.
The Brazilian was involved in a bit of a fracas in the Merseyside derby but his running will be instrumental in our side’s chances of winning the game and making it tough for the City defence.
