Former Liverpool midfielder names the one perfect signing Klopp must complete using Coutinho’s money

Liverpool might have gotten £142m from the sale of their star player Philippe Coutinho but that money has to be invested to make the side much better.

We did sign Virgil van Dijk before the Coutinho money came in but if we have plans to make it to the top of the Premier League there are a number of areas we need to strengthen according to a number of pundits.

Naby Keita is one player that will join us in the summer and Thomas Lemar has been linked with a move to Anfield. But we will need another signing for the midfield as Emre Can is expected to leave on a free transfer to Juventus.

That is exactly what Danny Murphy was saying. He was quoted by the Sport Review,

“He [Klopp] is letting Emre Can go at the end of the season. Liverpool need a powerful presence and a creator. There is always a leader, someone you can hang your hat on at Liverpool.”

We do need leadership to come into the heart of the midfield but Phil Thompson believes that we should add more quality to the defence, something we did solve a bit by getting Van Dijk.

“I’ve said all along the defence is the important area which needs addressing,” he told Sky Sports.

“I don’t think Van Dijk will solve it on his own so another centre-back, who is a real leader, and a top-class goalkeeper are required, but I don’t think they will happen in January as it has to be the right players.”

There was more advice for us coming in from Christian Purslow who suggests we need to get an upgrade on Loris Karius and Simon Mignolet, a position we have struggled with this season.

“The obvious need is for a world-class goalkeeper,” he said to Sky Sports. “If there is one thing I’d like the [Coutinho] money to go on, it would be a world-class goalkeeper.”

The money is there for the club to spend big and hopefully, they fix a number of problems that we have. With Jurgen Klopp playing an active role in our transfers, we should be able to get better in the coming season, even if we cannot get a player of Coutinho’s standard.
