“I’m really proud of them” Gerrard is a happy man after Liverpool U18’s win over Wolves U18

Our Under-18 manager Steven Gerrard seemed like a happy man after his U18 side secured a 2-1 victory over Wolves U18 at the Academy.

The youngsters scored twice in the first half through goals from Remi Savage and Jack Bearne, who were both making their first competitive starts. Wolves managed to score late on but their goal proved to be nothing but a consolation as we went on to secure a victory and remain in 2nd position in the U18 league, 4 points behind Manchester United with a game in hand.

Gerrard, who has been earmarked to manage our senior side in the future, enjoyed a good week as he also managed the U-19 side which went on to defeat Manchester United in the UEFA Youth League last week.

Gerrard was quoted by Liverpool Echo as saying,

“It’s always nice to win football matches. It’s been a tough month both for ourselves and the U23s.

“We were after a response and a reaction. We had a very, very young team and squad to pick from today but they’ve done excellently.

“I’m really proud of them and it’s nice to get back to winning ways, and we’ll move on to the next one.”

The young Reds had a difficult past month which also included the departures of Harry Wilson, Corey Whelan and Ovie Ejaria on loan.

“I’m thrilled for them, that’s what happens at an Academy. Players move up and it’s an opportunity for some of these young lads,” added Gerrard.

“It’s a bit of a sink or swim situation, and they certainly swam. Jack Bearne I thought he was excellent throughout, he’s a brave little kid, always wants to get on the ball. He’s playing against men here today and he’s 15 or 16.

“Remi gets a tap-in, right place, right time and that’s what set-pieces are about. Being ready and the first one to react. It’s a great three points for them and a wonderful experience for the young lads.

“The older lads looked after them, they encouraged them. We made a pact before the game – we won’t criticise our young players and we’ll only encourage them and it’s always positive, constructive criticism. I’m proud of my older lads on how they looked after the young kids.”

It looks like the young Reds are coming well after a difficult month and they all seem to be confident. Credits to Gerrard for grooming the youngsters well. Stevie G on the right path to becoming Liverpool’s head coach?
