Liverpool legend admits he quit Anfield too early – feels he should have stayed for another year

New Rangers manager and former Liverpool star Steven Gerrard has opened up about retiring from football and stated that he wanted to play for one more year for the Reds.

Gerrard left his boyhood club Liverpool to play for the LA Galaxy but retired soon after and started appearing on television for a number of channels.

The former captain also took up a coaching role with the youth teams at Anfield before deciding to go into management as he is now leading Scottish giants Rangers.

While speaking to the Scottish Daily Record, the former Red added that his days at Anfield came to an end a little early.

“I should have maybe played on for one more year. I regret not doing the extra year just because I miss playing. So much.”

Gerrard then added that a number of players he had spoken to actually wanted to retire and get over it.

“But emotionally it was tough. When you love your job and you work so hard to achieve your dream job to play for your boyhood team but you know that’s coming to an end.

“If you’ve had enough then it’s probably not tough. But I felt, certainly, that my 
Liverpool days came to an end probably a year too soon.”

Even though his time in America was not a hit, Gerrard said it was the perfect time to move to the country and 18 months was enough for him in the MLS.

Gerrard did manage to get his coaching badges but he could have been a bit part player for us like Francesco Totti was for AS Roma when his time at the Italian club was coming to an end.

Who knows what he might have achieved under Jurgen Klopp had he stayed for longer but for now, his role with Rangers will not be easy either as he looks to usurp his former boss Brendan Rodgers to the Scottish title.
