New theory suggested as to why Liverpool did not sign this German on a free transfer

Liverpool were linked heavily with a move for Max Meyer according to Football.london but the German international is yet to sign for a new club despite becoming a free agent at the end of last season.

The 22-year-old even rejected a new deal with his former club Schalke to move to a new club but that has not happened yet, with just a month to go before the campaign starts.

Bild (h/t Football.london) claims that the reason why Meyer did not end up at Liverpool was because of his excessive wage demands.

The report suggests that the German wanted £4million-a-year, a fee we were not willing to stump up. There has been interest in the midfielder from Fenerbahce and Atletico Madrid and both sides decided not to move for him, though Turkish Football claims Fenerbahce are back in the running for Meyer.

It was not just Liverpool who were interested in the midfielder as Arsenal and Barcelona also had tracked the youngster but it seems neither club was willing to go crazy and give him a huge deal.

While we have done a lot of our business early on, getting Meyer would have been a decent move given that we also lost Emre Can on a free transfer.

However, it seems Jurgen Klopp was not willing to splash the cash on a player that played 28 games last season and only contributed to one goal in the entire campaign.

The move from Meyer might end up costing him a bit and it looks like we have avoided making a mistake by not signing him.
