Liverpool FC transfer news: Maxwel Cornet keeps Liverpool option open

The Liverpool Echo reports that several Lyon players have been linked with the Reds in recent weeks.

Houssem Aouar, Tanguy Ndombele and Memphis Depay have all been linked with Liverpool recently with some reports in France (h/t Liverpool Echo) claiming that we scouted the Lyon players this season.

Nabil Fekir’s deal to join Liverpool did not materialise last season, and the report adds that another Lyon player we are interested in is Maxwel Cornet.

The 22-year-old Ivorian had a great season for the Ligue 1 side scoring 12 times and providing five assists in all competitions.

Contract issues for Cornet

The Liverpool Echo adds that Cornet has been unable to finalise a new contract with the Ligue 1 side.

The report claims that his current deal doesn’t end until 2021, but the Ivorian kept his options open regarding a move to Liverpool when asked about his future moves by beIN Sports France (h/t Liverpool Echo):

“I did not say I wanted to leave.

“We met the president [Jean-Michel Aulas] in January, and I said I wanted to extend [my contract], but talks were not successful.

“Liverpool are a big club, any links are flattering. I’m under contract until 2021, but you never know in football so we’ll see.”

Cornet played mostly down the right for Lyon last season as he helped them finish in the Champions League places.

The French side have a lot of quality young talent and some of them could be on the move in the summer.

Liverpool could do with another quality winger in the team to provide cover and competition for Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane.

Cornet might not be as high profile a name as Fekir or Depay, but under Jurgen Klopp, he could develop into a quality player at Anfield.
