“It would be better for my development” – Liverpool starlet explains decision to leave Anfield on loan

Latest Liverpool news: Marko Grujic explains why he rejoined Hertha Berlin for the upcoming season

Liverpool midfielder Marko Grujic has returned to Hertha Berlin for a second loan spell.

The 23-year-old impressed at the Bundesliga club last season but saw his campaign hampered by several injuries.

The youngster only played 20 Bundesliga games but scored five goals and assisted another one.

Marko Grujic celebrates

Grujic also returned to Liverpool during the campaign last season, and the Serbian confirmed he spoke with Jurgen Klopp about his future.

The 23-year-old told Sport Bild (h/t Bundesliga.com) that a return to Berlin was good for his development:

“I spent a few days in Liverpool for medical tests at the end of the season. We sat down together and talked about my plans.”

The Serbian added that he was contracted to the Reds until 2023, but he and the club had a similar opinion of his time at Berlin.

Grujic’s injuries hurt his campaign and the Serbian believed he could not play to his potential at the club.

“I have a contract with Liverpool until 2023, but we had a similar view: I was only able to call on 50 per cent of my abilities at Hertha. Niggling injuries set me back.

“He thought, and I agreed, it would be better for my development to spend another year in the Bundesliga.”

A good move for Grujic and Liverpool

The Serbian added that he had some unfinished business at Berlin, and wants to work under new manager Ante Covic. Liverpool sending Grujic out on loan again makes sense due to the plethora of midfielders we have in our side currently.

The Serbian can continue his development by playing first-team games at Berlin and hopefully, he remains injury free for most of the campaign.

Grujic could be a valuable member of the side in a couple of years, given that James Milner and Adam Lallana are in their 30s.
