Georginio Wijnaldum has revealed that Jurgen Klopp spoke to the Dutch midfielder regarding Virgil van Dijk before signing him.
The Dutch centre-back joined Liverpool for a world-record fee for a defender in 2018 and has become one of the best in the world.
Van Dijk has transformed our defence as we won the Champions League last season.
The 28-year-old also helped us to the best defensive record in the Premier League and Wijnaldum claimed that Klopp spoke with him about the defender (h/t Metro):
“Before I even joined Liverpool I had a meeting with Jurgen and during our talks he asked me about Virgil van Dijk.
“I had always rated Virgil very highly and my exact words to Jurgen were, ‘He is going to make the defence a lot better.’”
The Dutch midfielder further spoke about Van Dijk winning the UEFA Best Player award ahead of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.
Wijnaldum claimed that he expected his Dutch teammate to win the title and spoke about the success the 28-year-old has brought:
“Virgil has had a blinder of a season and has been so successful. Nothing about him surprises me any more.”
Wijnaldum and Van Dijk have been excellent for the national side too in their resurgence under Ronald Koeman.
Wijnaldum scored in the 4-2 win over Germany recently, while Van Dijk did well to ensure the Netherlands were in the game.
Van Dijk seems to be improving with every game under his belt and should lead us to more glory in the coming seasons.
