Liverpool have triggered Timo Werner’s release clause of £49million. The Reds have offered the striker a five-year contract, according to transfer expert Nicola Schira (h/t Express).
The 23-year-old striker can play anywhere along the front line. In spite of his versatility, he has predominantly played up front and has enjoyed a prolific season for RB Leipzig.
Werner has made 33 appearances for the Bundesliga side this season and has scored 27 goals and 11 assists
.Nicola Schira has revealed that Liverpool, having triggered the release clause, have offered Werner a five-year contract worth £6.7million-a-year. He also elaborated to mention that talks are undergoing to finalize the deal.
The Reds face a complicated scenario next season when Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane depart mid-season to take part in the Africa Cup of Nations.
Coping without two players of such high calibre will be a challenge for Jurgen Klopp’s side, especially at a busy time of the season. Having a player of Werner’s capability being ready to step up will come as a huge boost for the Reds.
Not only has he proved himself to be a prolific scorer, but his ability to play anywhere across the front line will suit Klopp’s system perfectly. His versatility can also help the Reds incorporate different formations and game plans, adding another dimension to an already strong team.
Werner recently spoke of his pride at being linked to a team and Liverpool. He went on to call the Reds the world’s best in what many saw was a ‘come and get me’ plea.
Werner’s release clause is said to be active until April. Whether the Reds close down a deal for the player remains to be seen.
