Under Jurgen Klopp, the Liverpool full-backs have added a new dimension to a rather unspectacular position. In Andy Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold, the German has two incredibly athletic defenders who can bomb up and down the pitch all game.
The duo essentially functions as playmakers from out wide, allowing our vaunted front three to play narrow. This has been showcased by the impressive assists tally put up by both Robertson and Trent.
This is exemplified by a combined 50 assists by the duo since the beginning of last season. Trent leads the way with 30 assists
while the Scotsman has 20 to his tally.Given the impressive numbers, a natural rivalry has developed among the duo as to who can register the most assists. Trent leads his teammate in this season’s tally by seven. Robertson has seven assists this season while Trent has 14.
The Englishman does, however, have an advantage over his Scottish compatriot that he is an adept set-piece taker. This also plays a role in considerably contributing to his success.
With football currently suspended and players enjoying a rather lengthy break, Robertson is keen to even out the playing field. The duo has consistently poked fun at each other
regarding their healthy competition. In a video posted on Twitter, the 26-year-old was seen to be hard at work perfecting his free-kick taking ability. Robertson showed perfect dexterity as he struck targets at opposite ends of the net with pinpoint precision.
He appeared to lay down the gauntlet to his teammate by sharing the message ‘There is a new free-kick taker when we get back’.
The Premier League could restart on May 2 at the earliest, giving both our assists kings enough time to sharpen their weapons before resuming their duel.
Trent came through the academy at Liverpool while Robertson was signed from Hull City for peanuts. Both have gone on to establish themselves as key components of this Liverpool juggernaut. One will be hard-pressed to find a better player in their positions who can contribute at both ends of the pitch with equal proficiency.
