According to the Liverpool Echo, UEFA have made the decision to postpone all European competitions, including the Champions League and Europa League, until further notice.
This comes in light of football currently being suspended in leagues across the continent. UEFA’s decision will now give the Premier League enough leeway to complete the remaining fixtures once it is deemed doable.
The news will come as a major relief to Liverpool, who are just six points away from claiming the club’s first league title in 30 years.
With no European competitions to add, the domestic schedule will be further cleared up to ensure that the season is completed at the earliest. The Reds are currently 25 points clear at the top. Having had an incredible season, it would have been a grave injustice for Liverpool had the season been called off.
The decision was also made to belay all deadlines relating to the qualification for next season’s UEFA club competitions. New dates will be set in due course. This is, however, not something the Reds will have to worry about, considering we have already qualified for the Champions League by winning the trophy last season.
It can also help the Premier League come to a natural conclusion. Matters regarding relegation and the battle for European spots are far from decided.
The Premier League is currently suspended until April 30. It is highly likely that the date will be extended further. Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson had earlier commented that football could still be months away.
UEFA have also announced that given the circumstances, they will be relaxing Financial Fair Play rules for participation in next season’s European competitions.
With Melwood shut down, the Liverpool players are in self-isolation at their homes. The club have restarted group training this week via video conferencing. It remains to be seen when we see our heroes in action next.
