According to Turkish outlet Fotospor (h/t Mirror), Super Lig side Besiktas could trigger the clause to buy goalkeeper Loris Karius from Liverpool on a permanent basis.
The decision represents a u-turn by the Turks, who had earlier decided against doing so. This will help Liverpool land £7.25million for the German. This represents a profit on a player currently deemed surplus to requirement sat Anfield.
The club has been left impressed by the player’s response to the coronavirus pandemic and are considering keeping him beyond the summer. The 26-year-old chose to stay back in Turkey rather than return home, unlike a number of his teammates.
Karius joined Besiktas in the summer of 2018 on a two-year loan. His position at Liverpool had become untenable following his high-profile errors in the Champions League final.
With the Reds securing Alisson Becker for a then world-record fee, it was deemed wise to let Karius go and rebuild his career elsewhere.
According to the report, Karius has revealed to the Besiktas board that he can convince the Reds to let him leave on a free in spite of his contract running until 2021
. The shot-stopper is so keen on the move that he is also willing to waive off his unpaid wages.Although prone to the odd error, Karius has been a largely dependent figure in goal for the Turkish giants. He has made 67 appearances for the Black Eagles and has kept 14 clean sheets.
The Turks are yet to find a replacement for Karius. Fulham’s Fabri, Aston Villa’s Orjan Nyland, and Burnley ’s Joe Hart have all been named as possible choices. (h/t Mirror)
Karius is a decent keeper who has made a number of good performances for Liverpool. Unfortunately for him, he will always be remembered for his performance in the Champions League final.
It makes sense for him to rebuild his reputation and career away from Anfield. Let’s hope it works out for him and he experiences success wherever he ends up.
