Liverpool legend admits current Reds star could go onto become the best in PL history

Carra backs Alexander-Arnold to become the best right-back in PL history

According to The Football Show on Sky Sports (h/t Mirror), Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has backed Trent Alexander-Arnold to develop into the best right-back the Premier League has ever seen.

The local lad has come a long way since making his debut for the first-team in 2016 against Tottenham Hotspur in the League Cup. Although it was the swashbuckling performance we are now used to, he did enough to be selected for the EFL Team of the Round

.

Four years on, he is a European and World Club champion who keeps the scouse heartbeat alive in the Reds XI.

Carragher expects Alexander Arnold to overtake Gary Neville

Trent has since made 125 appearances for the club and has scored six goals and an astounding 34 assists

. This accounts to roughly a goal contribution every three games, an impressive number for a right-back.

His success on the pitch has led to Carragher admitting that he was wrong to imply that right-back was an undesirable position in football.

Carragher holds his fellow host and former rival, Gary Neville, in high regard, but believes Alexander-Arnold will soon overtake his exploits.

“I think there’s a fella there who plays for Liverpool now who’s going to take that mantle from Gary.”

Nobody dreams of being a full-back? Not anymore

He has gone on to prophesize that in a few years’ time, Alexander-Arnold will be a shoo in for the conversation of the best ever in the position. If the youngster keeps performing as he has, it will be a matter of when rather than if.

“I think in a few years time when we’re talking about Premier League XI’s it will be the lad from Liverpool and not the lad from Manchester.”

Trent Alexander-Arnold matched his EPL record of 12 assists

Still just 21, Alexander-Arnold lags behind Neville by just a goal and 13 assists, while playing less than a quarter of the games the United star has.

The youngster has revolutionized the way full-backs are used in football today. Alongside Andy Robertson on the other flank, the duo has made it fashionable to be a full-back in today’s game.

Interestingly, Alexander-Arnold could have turned out for United had things gone differently. His uncle John Alexander was the club secretary at Old Trafford while his maternal grandmother had at one point in time had a relationship with Sir Alex Ferguson. (h/t ESPN)

A generational player, we are glad he wears the right shade of Red.
