Tyrone Mings reveals growing up as a Liverpool fan

According to TalkSport (h/t Birmingham Mail), Aston Villa star Tyrone Mings has revealed that he was a Liverpool fan growing up. Not surprisingly, his hero was former Reds skipper Steven Gerrard.

His allegiance will come as no surprise to people already aware that he had named his pet dog Heskey, after former Liverpool striker Emile Heskey.

Mings was attracted to players who showcased their leadership skills. It would have been a travesty had anyone but Gerrard stood out in the list given his personal contributions to collective glory at Anfield.

“I was a Liverpool fan so Steven Gerrard was my favourite player because of how he demanded the best from everybody who was on the pitch with him.”

A bit-part player at Bournemouth, Mings made an excellent decision to leave for Villa Park in 2019. The 27-year-old has been a rock at the back for Villa and has impressed despite his team’s struggles. He has made 26 appearances for the Villans this season and has scored two goals and one assist.

Mings still finds travelling to grounds such as Anfield a surreal experience. A thorough professional, he is able to block out the emotional quotient to do what is required of him on the pitch.

His first visit to the stadium came as a Bournemouth player. Unfortunately, he was an unused substitute on the night and did not get to take on to the famous pitch.

“Being there was obviosuly great, I’d never been there before so it was a little bit strange.”

Mings led from the front as a defiant Villa side kept Liverpool’s attack in check for the majority of the game at Villa Park earlier in the season.

Late goals from Andy Robertson and Sadio Mane ensured the Reds’ quality shone through, enabling us to come away with all three points. Mings was a beast on the night and showed great leadership to arrange his backline. Had Steven Gerrard been watching, he would surely have nodded in approval.
