Liverpool in talks with the agent of Inter Milan star Marcelo Brozovic

According to Libero (h/t Express), Liverpool are in touch with the agent of Inter Milan star Marcelo Brozovic to bring him to Anfield.

The 27-year-old has established himself as a key component of Antonio Conte’s resurgent Inter side. Recent performances have seen the player establish himself as one of the best midfielders in the league.

The Croatian made the move to Italy in the summer of 2015. The midfielder initially spent the first year on loan before making his stay permanent the following season.

He has since made 186 appearances for the Nerazzurri. Brozovic has scored an impressive 23 goals and registered a further 22 assists during this time. The midfielder has been a constant in the Nerazzurri lineup this season and has only missed games when injured.

The 27-year-old has two years left on his Inter contract and could be in need of a change of scenery. Liverpool are currently a team at the top of the game, with the potential to get even better. Joining the Reds would be a step up for Brozovic.

Inter are keen to keep the player and are hoping to start contract negotiations with the midfielder (h/t Express).

Bang to the buck?

His current release clause stands at £52 million. The fee is a bit much considering he turns 28 this year and will not be a long-term investment for the Reds.

Both Jordan Henderson and Georginio Wijnaldum will turn 30 this year. James Milner is also not getting any younger, necessitating an infusion of youth in the middle of the park.

Signing Brozovic for this release clause makes no sense as he will not outlast our current seniors by much. In spite of having impressed at the San Siro, the Croatian must do more to justify an outlay that will make the club’s fourth most expensive signing. (h/t Lfchistory.net)

According to the report, Inter are keen on Wijnaldum. The Dutchman is entering the final year of his contract at Anfield. Liverpool are close to agreeing a new deal that will see him stay at the club until 2024. (h/t Express)

Brozovic is a versatile player who is capable of playing as a deep-lying playmaker or as a box to box midfielder. There is no doubting his quality and he will surely give our manager more options.

But if the Reds are forced to meet his release clause, they are better off looking elsewhere.
