According to Sky Sports (h/t Metro), Jamie Carragher has backed former skipper Steven Gerrard to take over as Liverpool manager once Jurgen Klopp decides to call it a day. He has, however, gone on to add that Gerrard will need to prove himself in the Premier League before being given the opportunity.
Gerrard is currently managing Scottish side Rangers. Following his retirement, he returned to Liverpool in 2017 as a coach in the club’s academy. He eventually rose to take charge of the Liverpool Under-18 side.
He eventually took over Rangers in 2018. The Scouser has successfully revived the Scottish team’s fortunes and also led them to their first win over Celtic since 2012. Gerrard is a legend at Liverpool. However, Carragher believes this is not enough for him to land the Anfield job.
He remarked that his former teammate will have to boost up his CV, preferably with Premier League experience to bolster his chances of being handed Liverpool’s reins.
“Yes, listen, I think at one stage, whether the timing is right. The timing has to be right”
He went on to compare Frank Lampard’s position at Chelsea to gain perspective. Chelsea has a habit of constantly chopping and changing managers, unlike Liverpool.
If a manager does well on Merseyside, he will be given time to see things out. There is no doubt that Gerrard’s name will do the rounds when the Liverpool job becomes available again. But for him to actually take charge, he will have to be available first.
Whether he does eventually get the job or not depends on whether he is the best candidate at that point.
The former Liverpool number 8 is one of the best players to ever don the Red shirt. A captain who led by example, he has single-handedly gotten us across the line numerous times. Although that guarantees him goodwill and respect, it does not necessarily mean he should be given the job on past merit.
Klopp recently signed an extension to stay at Liverpool until 2024. As our best manager in the Premier League era, we hope he can stay forever. That is unfortunately not possible and let’s hope the club makes a pragmatic choice rather than a sentimental one.
