According to Goal (h/t Liverpool Echo), Liverpool have offered midfielder Pedro Chirivella a new five-year deal. His contract was set to expire this summer.
In spite of joining the Reds in 2015, Chirivella has found playing time easier to come when out on loan rather than at Anfield.
The midfielder who turns 23 this week has seen his stock rise following a number of impressive outings this season. This marked improvement can be seen in the fact that six of his 11 appearances
for the club have come in the current campaign. After coming on as a substitute against MK Dons and Arsenal in the Carabao Cup, Chirivella captained a young Reds side in the quarter-final defeat at Aston Villa. He then put on eye-catching displays against both Everton and Shrewsbury Town in the FA Cup.
With his contract set to expire in June, the Reds do have the option of extending it until the end of the season. This, however, has to be agreed on by both parties.
Chirivella is one of the three first-team players who are soon to be free agents. The other two being Adam Lallana and Nathaniel Clyne. Given the current financial instability, the Reds will be wise to extend the deals of at least the former two players.
The Spaniard will be hard-pressed to demand a starting spot in the playing XI. However, he has shown that he can be a capable deputy when needed. In a long season fighting on multiple fronts, such players are worth their weight in gold.
Liverpool hopes the player will be tempted to sign given the long-term security the offer presents.
Chirivella is yet to make a decision on his future. Scottish giants Rangers and Ligue 1 side Nantes have been touted as possible destinations for the Spaniard.
