Ajax defender Perr Schuurs has responded to rumours linking with a transfer to Liverpool

Speaking to SBS6 (h/t Metro) after the 1-0 loss against Liverpool on Tuesday, Ajax defender Perr Schuurs responded to reports linking him with a move to Liverpool.

Jurgen Klopp is reportedly in the market for new centre-backs after Joe Gomez and Virgil van Dijk both picked up injuries which could see them out for a majority of the current season.

Last week, reports claimed that Liverpool had submitted an offer for Per Schuurs before the start of the January transfer window. (h/t Metro)

When asked about the reports linking him with a move away from Amsterdam, the 21-year-old defender said that he wants to be at Ajax for the time being.

“I hear and read it [Liverpool rumours] too. It’s my first season as a basic player at Ajax. I want to play here for a few more seasons and win trophies. I’m not really working on that yet.”

The defender, who recently turned 21 in November, went on to analyse his performance in Ajax’s narrow defeat to the Reds at Anfield.

“We come here for three points, but we don’t get them. We have created enough chances and earned at least a point. It was good, especially in the first half. Of course, I get a yellow card. Then it becomes a bit more wait-and-see, that is a factor in your head. Personally, I can look back on a good game, but I am disappointed that we did not get more.”

Schuurs has played a stellar role in Ajax’s early title charge in the Eredivisie. The young Dutch defender has helped Ajax to 9 wins.

In fact, the Dutch club’s only loss in the Eredivisie this season came when Schuurs did not start (against Groningen). Schurrs also featured in both of Ajax’s narrow 1-0 losses to Liverpool in the UEFA Champions League.

Such a trust placed in him by Erik Ten Haag speaks volumes about the potential and ability of the Dutchman. If we were to sign him, he would add immense quality as well as depth to our injury-hit backline.
