Report: Liverpool planning to offer ‘untouchable’ star a bumper contract extension

Liverpool are looking to offer ‘untouchable’ Fabinho a new and improved contract

A report by The Guardian states that Liverpool are looking to offer Fabinho a new contract, with the 27-year-old becoming one of the ‘untouchables’ in the Reds’ squad recently.

Fabinho joined Liverpool in the summer of 2018 from Ligue 1 side AS Monaco but had a reserved start to his career at Liverpool as he did not see much action in the first few months after his move to Merseyside.

However, the versatile defensive midfielder was a major part of the Liverpool team that won the Premier League and UEFA Champions League titles in the past one and a half year.

Fabinho has also shown his utility this season as the Brazilian has deputized at centre-back to great effect. With Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez out for lengthy spells, Fabinho has been Klopp’s trusted centre-back.

Liverpool are, hence, looking to reward Fabinho for his performances with a new contract that significantly improves his £100,000-a-week wages and keeps him at the club until the summer of 2025 or 2026.

Fabinho’s current contract expires in the summer of 2023 and while there is no urgency to finalize a deal for a new contract so soon, it is best to lock down players as early as possible and keep them happy by paying them a wage they think they deserve for their performances.

Liverpool will also learn from the ongoing Georginio Wijnaldum saga whereby the Dutchman has not agreed a new deal at the club which expires next summer. (h/t The Guardian)

The report states Liverpool will enter into contract talks with him again but there are no clear indications about that from the club or the player himself.

Both Wijnaldum and Fabinho will be expecting a rest as Liverpool play Midtjylland in a UEFA Champions League dead-rubber this week. The Reds have already qualified for the last-16 as group winners.
