Liverpool have ‘made an offer’ for £25.8m Serie A midfield star as Wijnaldum nears exit

Transfer News: Liverpool amongst several clubs to make an offer for AS Roma midfielder Lorenzo Pellegrini

According to Italian outlet Corriere dello Sport (h/t Daily Star), Liverpool are one of many clubs to have ‘made an offer’ for Lorenzo Pellegrini ahead of a possible transfer in the summer window.

The report mentions that the Italian midfielder’s future is uncertain under their incoming manager, Jose Mourinho. The Portuguese was sacked by Tottenham Hotspur earlier this year and is now set to join the Romans for the next season.

The midfielder is currently with the Italian national team as he prepares for the 2020 UEFA Euros. He has been a regular fixture in the Serie A side’s midfield and has a release clause set at £25.8m.

He made 34 league appearances this season and grabbed an impressive 7 goals and 6 assists from midfield. That is certainly a number that would impress Liverpool fans considering their midfielders’ lack of goals in recent seasons.

Pellegrini to Merseyside

Pellegrini can act as a replacement for Georginio Wijnaldum, who looks all set to leave the club. According to ESPN

, PSG and Barcelona are interested in securing a free transfer for the Dutchman.

And with such a dependable midfielder now looking primed to leave, there is no doubt that a void will be left to fill. Jurgen Klopp could have to look for solutions in the transfer market and Pellegrini seems like a good option.

Depth and strength in midfield are vital for Liverpool going into the next season where they would be targeting glory. Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain have been hit with recurrent injuries and hence, cannot be totally depended on to replace Wijnaldum.

This season also saw Jordan Henderson and Thiago Alcantara succumb to injuries that heavily impacted the Reds’ season. And so, Klopp would be aware that he has to be ready for such a catastrophic situation next season.
