Galatasaray eye move for out-of-favour Liverpool centre-back Nat Phillips.
According to Sky Sports, Liverpool defender Nat Phillips is attracting considerable attention from a number of clubs this summer.
The centre-back rose to prominence last season when he was thrust into the starting line-up following the Reds’ injury crisis in the position. With the likes of Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip all out for the season, Phillips has at times been forced to don the role of the senior central defender.
He made 20 appearances for Liverpool of which 17 came in the Premier League. Phillips scored a goal and grabbed an assist as the Reds made a late push to secure Champions League football. (h/t Transfermarkt
)The string of battling performances has brought the 24-year-old to the fore. A player who looked set to leave last summer, he has a number of suitors keen on taking him on this time around. Funny what a season can change.
The likes of Brighton and Hove Albion, Newcastle United, Bayer Leverkusen, West Ham United and Burnley are all keeping tabs on Phillips. Strong in the air with a never say die spirit, he adds fire and steel to the backline.
Phillips who enjoyed a loan stint with Stuttgart in Germany has been subject to interest from Leverkusen. The Bundesliga side is yet to make a formal offer but has sounded out their interest to the player’s agent.
The likes of Van Dijk, Matip and Gomez are all nearing a return and will be ahead of Phillips in the pecking order. Moreover, with the arrival of Ibrahima Kanoute, the Englishman is arguably the fifth-choice defender at the club.
With Ben Davies also present, it does give Liverpool sensational depth in the position. But being resigned to the bench after his last string of performances is unfair on Phillips. He would be better off moving to another club where he can play on a regular basis.
Phillips was an unknown quantity before our injury crisis surfaced. He has however seized the opportunity and enhanced his reputation. While he could still leave the club this summer, this time, he will do so with his head held high.
