Liverpool keeping close tabs on this promising 21-year-old Polish ace

Transfer News: Liverpool keeping close tabs on Sebastian Walukiewicz

According to Calcio Mercato (h/t Liverpool Echo), Liverpool are keeping tabs on Cagliari defender Sebastian Walukiewicz.

The 21-year-old is one of the most promising central defenders in the Italian top-flight. He joined the Italians in 2019 and has since made 37 appearances for the club, making one assist.

The Polish starlet started off the 2020/21 campaign in fine form and was a regular fixture for the Italians for the first half of the season. He couldn’t however sustain it and was dropped to the bench for the latter half of the campaign. Injuries did little to help his case as well.

Despite the setback, Walukiewicz remains an excellent prospect and is well within the Reds’ radar. According to the report, he could be available for as little as £8million.

As he is is unrefined yet, Walukiewicz needs to hone his game in the years to come. Despite that, he appears to have a number of suitors and remains a subject of interest.

While his asking price does indicate a risk worth taking, it is debatable if Liverpool need another defender to begin with. The Reds have already signed Ibrahima Konate and have the likes of Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip all returning to fitness.

Liverpool signed Konate earlier this summer

With Nathaniel Phillips and Ben Davies also in the fray, Jurgen Klopp is spoilt for choices when there are no injury concerns. There is little reason for us to bring in another defender, even if it’s for a reasonable price.

The same could not be said for next summer. Joel Matip is not getting younger and has struggled with injury. There will come a time that we will need to replace the reliable Cameroonian.

With Konate and Gomez young enough to start for us in the future, the Reds could be set in the position. As things stand, Walukiewicz needs to up his game considerably to even stand a chance of featuring for the Reds.

The fact that Liverpool passed on the signing of Ozan Kabak shows that the Reds are not keen on bringing in another centre-back. We for one will be surprised if the club does make a move for Walukiewicz this summer.
