Liverpool refuse to let Mohamed Salah play for Egypt vs Angola

According to a statement released by the Egypt FA (h/t The Guardian), Liverpool have refused to let Mohamed Salah play for his country in their World Cup qualifiers game against Angola.

The game takes place during the international break on 2nd September in Cairo. Egypt, being on UK’s red list, would see Salah spend 10 days in quarantine

And for this reason, the club has seemingly refused to let their 29-year-old superstar join up with his team in Egypt’s capital city in early September. An excerpt from Egypt FA’s statement reads:

“The Egyptian Football Association has received a letter from Liverpool FC apologising for the inability of its player, Mohamed Salah, to join the national team in its next camp, which includes facing Angola in Cairo and Gabon in Franceville during the first and second rounds of the African continent’s qualifiers for the World Cup.”

LFC face Brazil issue

The report goes on to mention that the Reds don’t have any problem with Salah playing for Egypt against Gabon on 5th September. Gabon is on UK’s amber list, and hence, no quarantine regulations would apply.

A similar situation could arise with Liverpool’s Brazilian trio of Alisson Becker, Fabinho, and Roberto Firmino. The South American country is on UK’s red list, which could see the three Liverpool players miss up to three games when returning from the international break.

Liverpool’s position on the matter is understandable. The club pays Salah’s wages and would want the former Chelsea and Basel man to be available for crucial games this season.
