Spanish giant open to selling their most priced asset amidst Liverpool and Man City interest

FC Barcelona are willing to sell Frenkie de Jong amidst interest from Liverpool and Manchester City

According to Diaro AS (h/t International Business Times), FC Barcelona are open to selling their star midfielder Frenkie de Jong to raise funds for transfer dealings in the coming windows.

The Dutchman joined Barcelona from Ajax for a fee of €75million in 2019. He has a contract with his current club that runs until 2026 and, he is widely considered one of the best midfield talents in the world.

Following his move to Spain, the 24-year-old has played 106 matches and has scored nine goals

while setting up his teammates 14 times. However, he has not been up to his best this season and has struggled to find a footing in midfield. This was more due to the inability of Ronald Koeman and Sergi Barjuan to find a fixed role for the player.

Barca are in desperate need of funds to support their new manager, Xavi Hernandez and have deemed the Dutchman as an option to raise some money.

They are ready to accept offers from $78 million for the Dutch international. With a budget of less than $11 million in the winter transfer window, it is understandable why they are open to selling one of their assets. They also have other midfield options like Pedri, Gavi and Nico Gonzalez, who has emerged onto the scene.

Liverpool are very much interested in the midfielder as they have failed to replace Georginio Wijnaldum. They also had to deal with injury issues in midfield as Thiago and Naby Keita have been in and out of the squad.

Premier League rivals Manchester City are also highly interested in the Barca midfielder. Fernandinho is in the latter stages of his career and, a versatile and talented player like de Jong could fill that role.

The Reds’ sporting director, Michael Edwards, is doing his best to facilitate this transfer as a parting gift since he will leave the club at the end of the season.
