“Big problems” – Former Prem star reveals repercussions of a new Salah deal at Liverpool

Gabby Agbonlahor hints that Liverpool handing Mohamed Salah a stellar new contract conjuring different kinds of problems

Speaking to Football Insider as quoted by Metro, Gabby Agbonlahor claims that Liverpool could offer superstar Mohamed Salah a new £400,000-a-week bumper deal. The former Premier League player also highlighted how this could become a huge problem for the club due to their current wage cap.

The 35-year-old made some interesting comments regarding the Salah contract situation which seems to have dragged out for a really long time now. The standstill has put many fans on edge with varying twists and turns throughout the saga.

In a conversation with Football Insider as quoted by Metro, the former Aston Villa forward hinted that Liverpool are set to offer Salah a lucrative deal to keep him at Anfield. This could pose new difficulties for the club hierarchy.

‘I think there’s going to be big problems at Liverpool because I’m hearing Salah is close to signing a very big contract of £400,000-a-week. The problem with that and the reason that Liverpool are scared to give him that is because Mane will want similar, Van Dijk will want to renegotiate because he’s just signed a new contract.

Agbonlahor shed light on the fact that offering the Egyptian this new bumper contract could open the floodgates for an expensive affair at Anfield. It could pose a different threat as some of the other players could potentially ask for a bigger paycheck.

‘When you go over the wage cap at a club the doors will open and other players are going to want increases. It’s going to be very interesting and very expensive for Liverpool. It’s definitely a big problem.’

The contract saga continues

In a recent report by Sky Sports, we saw senior journalist Melissa Reddy hint that there were positive talks between Liverpool and the Egyptian star at the moment. The recruitment of Diogo Jota and Luis Diaz has also added more depth to the forward lineup at Anfield.

This could give the Merseysiders some leeway in terms of negotiating a contract as they do not solely depend on Salah to rake in the goals at the moment. At the same time, very seldom have we seen a player have such a great impact with the Reds in the last decade or so.

The former AS Roma player has bagged 153 goals and recorded 58 assists in 243 matches across all competitions for Liverpool to date. He has set the bar higher with every passing season managing to deliver in front of goal consistently.

Considering the fact that someone like Kevin de Bruyne earns £400,000 a week with Jadon Sancho as well as Raphael Varane earning £350,000 and £340,000 per week respectively, one could argue that the Egyptian international isn’t totally wrong to ask for a massive upgrade.

With the former FC Basel making a substantial impact, we can understand why he would command such a salary. That being said, Salah will turn 30 in around two months and we would thus have to take into factor the long-term suitability of such a deal.

The club should also take into account that any new deal shouldn’t put an unnecessary amount of burden on our finances. Whilst there are many factors involved in such a deal, the fans would be hopeful that the Egyptian star can see out his playing future at Anfield.

Mohamed Salah made the switch to Anfield in 2017 and the rest is history. The club have managed to win the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Super Cup, FIFA Club World Cup as well as the EFL Cup since that time, with the Egyptian playing a major role in these conquests.
