According to Liverpool Echo, Liverpool defender Joe Gomez could return to full fitness ahead of the UEFA Champions League final as he has shown optimistic signs of recovery.
The Englishman hasn’t played much after recovering from the previous injury that kept him sidelined for a large part of the previous campaign. Even though Gomez has played in 21 matches across all competitions this term, he has largely been used as a substitute.
The 25-year-old suffered an injury against Southampton after Mohammed Salisu stepped on his ankle at the end of the first half. He had to be taken off the field on a stretcher and was seen limping while boarding the team bus later that night.
Liverpool took two scans on Gomez and now it seems the player is confident of making a comeback to training before the Champions League final on 28th May. He was seen walking freely on the pitch after the match against Wolves, which is a good sign regarding his fitness.
There are already some fitness concerns in the Liverpool squad as Thiago Alcantara, Fabinho and Virgil van Dijk are all doubtful for the final. Amid such a situation, Gomez’s injury boost could provide some relief to Jurgen Klopp.
Even though the 25-year-old hasn’t featured much in the last two seasons, he used to be a crucial squad member before that and a regular partner of Virgil van Dijk. The manager now has a preferred choice in Matip and has put his faith in Ibrahima Konaté of late.
As long as the Matip and Virgil van Dijk partnership is bringing success, there’s no need for Klopp to tinker with it. They have been a formidable force in the back and have guarded the line against some top-notch attacking contingents in the world.
However, if Van Dijk can’t make his return to action in the Champions League final, then the manager has a decision to make. Whether he goes for the energetic and skilful Konate over the experienced Gomez is a big question.
Regardless, Gomez’s injury return would act as a plus point for the whole squad. Knowing that a quality backup is in line would provide a confidence boost to the other players. It remains to be seen what combination the manager uses in Paris.
