Transfer News: Liverpool losing the race for 2005-born defender playing in Scotland

Transfer News: Newcastle United set to beat Liverpool and Manchester City in the race for Charlie McArthur

According to the Telegraph (h/t ChronicleLive), Newcastle United are close to signing Charlie McArthur from Kilmarnock, which would come as a blow to Liverpool.

The Reds, along with Manchester City, Wolves, Brighton & Hove Albion, and West Ham United have been linked with a move for the 17-year-old centre-back. But it seems that the Scotland U17 international could move to St James’ Park.

Standing at 6ft 2ins, there is no surprise that a number of PL teams have been interested in the physically imposing defender. The player would be expected to train with Newcastle’s U23 side if he does make the move to Tyneside.

Does this come as a blow for LFC? If they miss out on him, then sure, it could prove to be a case of one that got away. But then again, there is no urgent need for him, at least in the senior team.

A big blow?

Our U23 squad could use an addition, with Billy Koumetio, Tom Clayton, and Jarell Quansah making up the trio of centre-backs at Barry Lewtas’ disposal. But we always have our U18 team to supply a couple of younglings to the Premier League 2 side if there is a need.

The potential move to Newcastle could make sense for the teenager as well. The Magpies, under their new ownership, are optimistic about replicating and even bettering the success showcased by clubs like Manchester City in recent years.

Could Jurgen Klopp live to rue Charlie McArthur ‘mistake’?

But that can be a long process at times- having to find the right manager, the right players, and the right system. Until then, it can be argued that McArthur would have a better chance of first-team football with the Toons.

There wouldn’t be a shortage of talented young defenders looking to make a name for themselves. But if McArthur does swerve Anfield for another PL club and goes on to become a world-class player, then perhaps our fans would wonder what could have been had we made the extra effort to get his signature.
