“Deserved”- Manchester City CEO sides with Liverpool over UCL final loss vs Real Madrid

Manchester City CEO claims Liverpool did not deserve to lose against Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League final

Speaking on the Dr Football Podcast via Sport Bible (h/t Manchester Evening News), Manchester City CEO Ferran Soriano claimed that Liverpool were unlucky to lose against Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League final.

Soriano was talking about Man City’s luck in the UCL over the years- a competition they have failed to win in their history- and cited Madrid as an example of how luck can play a part in it.

“The Champions League is an additional trophy that we want but we know that it might be subject to a bit of luck so we’re not obsessed. People say now about the success that Real Madrid have had in the last years and I think it’s fair to say that there’s been a bit of luck.”

The final between the Reds and Los Blancos was one of the most difficult games to watch for a Liverpool fan. We dominated the game throughout the course of the 90 minutes, but our attack’s wastefulness- Mohamed Salah in particular- cost us the trophy.

“Maybe I could say that they deserved to lose against PSG, against Chelsea, against us, against Liverpool. But, people do not remember that in the 90s, 80s, Real Madrid had a fantastic team, one of the best in history with Butragueno and they couldn’t win. They were knocked out of the Champions (League).”

What to make of his comments?

City’s CEO made the point about Liverpool to show that his side wasn’t obsessed about winning the Champions League. That is something for them to worry about- although one could argue that it may just be a case of sour grapes.

If City weren’t so focussed on winning the UCL, the sackings of Roberto Mancini and Manuel Pellegrini don’t make a lot of sense. They were, after all, enjoying domestic success with City.

Pep was brought in with the aim of continuing this domestic dominance and winning something in Europe. Surely no one can deny this. Nevertheless, Soriano is right about one thing.

Madrid’s 14th UCL title was largely down to luck, although being lucky so many times in big games takes skill as well. They know how to manage the match and play to their strengths.

City were a couple of minutes away from reaching only their second Champions League final but Madrid popped up with goals out of nowhere. There is just something about the team for Spain that even without Sergio Ramos and Cristiano Ronaldo- one would fancy them to somehow get a result against any football team in the world.
