Romano: Liverpool cult hero rejects “several proposals” as he moves closer to joining new club

Former Liverpool forward Divock Origi turned down other clubs including Villarreal for a move to AC Milan

Divock Origi is set to complete his medical and sign his new contract as an AC Milan player after rejecting other European clubs. The Belgian joins the Italian club on a free transfer after leaving Liverpool.

According to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, the forward turned down bids from other clubs and opted for a move to the San Siro. Villarreal and other top clubs from Germany and England were vying for his signature, but the 27-year-old is now set to join the Rossoneri.

Origi’s time at Liverpool a success

Origi was signed by Liverpool in 2014 but remained at Lille on loan for the 2014/15 season. In his first season in Merseyside, the Belgian had a hard time with injuries but still managed to get into the squad occasionally.

In the 2016/17 season, Origi became an important part of the team and featured 43 times for Liverpool. But the Belgian’s next season was spent out on loan at Wolfsburg as Jurgen Klopp had other players at his disposal.

Upon returning for the 2018/19 season, the 27-year-old became somewhat of a cult hero, coming off the bench and scoring some crucial goals.

Two Champions League goals against Barcelona in the second leg of the semi-final and one goal against Spurs in the final have cemented Origi’s legacy at Anfield.

Although the Belgian striker has found game time hard to come by, the 27-year-old’s impact when he’s been on the pitch has been undeniable.

Origi’s last two seasons have seen him play very little football. And with the additions of Darwin Nunez, Fabio Carvalho and Luis Diaz this year, a move away at this time is the right decision for the player.

The Belgian leaves the club as a Champions League, Premier League, FA Cup and Carabao Cup winner, something most players dream of achieving.

Liverpool fans will look back on his time in Merseyside and remember the success the Belgian brought to Anfield despite rarely being the first name on the team sheet at the club.
