Raheem Sterling has enjoyed a tough time against Liverpool.
According to journalist Jacque Talbot while speaking to GIVEMESPORT (h/t Liverpoolfc.com), Liverpool rejected the chance to sign Raheem Sterling from Manchester City this summer.
The winger apparently wanted to move to Anfield ahead of the Blues but it seems LFC were not interested. The Englishman, of course, enjoyed a successful spell at Liverpool before his move to the Etihad.
The now 27-year-old attacker was particularly lethal under Brendan Rodgers’ guidance but changed allegiances before Jurgen Klopp could get the chance to manage him.
Having fallen down the pecking order at Man City, Sterling sealed a move to Stamford Bridge to play next season under Thomas Tuchel. But according to Talbot, things could have been different had the Anfield outfit been open to a controversial return.
“We heard from reliable sources that Sterling actually wanted to go to Liverpool before making the move for Chelsea. I don’t think Manchester United were a consideration, but what I heard is that in essence, Liverpool rejected him.”
Most Liverpool fans don’t really take kindly to Sterling whenever he pulls up to Anfield in opposition colours. Perhaps that feeling could have been reversed if Sterling moved back here.
But in hindsight, the club made the right call. Mohamed Salah and Luis Diaz are already our star wingers, with Diogo Jota an added competition down that flank.
Sterling can play as a false nine but we already have Darwin Nunez and Roberto Firmino in our ranks. It’s better that we held onto our funds and hopefully, we see the club spend wisely on a new midfielder.
After all, that is the only position that looks like it needs strengthening right now.
