According to GOAL (h/t Liverpool Echo), interest in Liverpool defender Nat Phillips seems to be ‘growing’ this summer.
The Englishman has been linked with an exit during the current transfer window and has suitors in Germany as well as in the Championship. Now 25, he is at a point in his career where regular minutes would do him a world of good.
It is hard to envisage Phillips being a starter for Gareth Southgate’s England side but the implausible would become impossible if he spends his prime years warming our benches.
Phillips leaving the Reds wouldn’t hurt Jurgen Klopp a lot. We already have world-class defenders in Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate, Joel Matip, and Joe Gomez.
If things go as wrong as they did in the 2020/21 season regarding injuries, there is always Fabinho Tavares to rely on, who can play as a central defender.
The Reds apparently rejected two bids for Phillips back in January this year, one of which was from Watford (h/t Liverpool Echo). He went on to spend the second half of last season at Bournemouth, helping win promotion to the Premier League.
Only time will tell what happens with Phillips. He started the game against Manchester United in Thailand earlier this month, where we lost 4-0.
The Englishman then came on against Crystal Palace in our pre-season friendly in Singapore – a game we went on to win comfortably by a 2-0 scoreline. Perhaps, these two performances served as auditions for any of his potential suitors.
It would make sense for him to play in the first division of a top European league but there is always the route of making your name in the Championship and then attracting interest from the big boys of English football.
