According to former England and Aston Villa striker Gabby Agbonlahor, Cristiano Ronaldo has no loyalty to Manchester United or any of his former teams and would join Liverpool if he could.
The Red Devils striker is still attempting to push for a transfer out of Old Trafford so that he can play in the Champions League the next season. Despite the Portuguese sensation’s 18 league goals, United’s 2021/22 season was a disaster, and they are now forced to play in the Europa League.
Recently, there have been rumours linking the Portuguese player with a move to Atletico Madrid, with whom he had a fierce rivalry while playing for Real Madrid. The former Juventus striker has been linked to several teams.
In recent weeks, both Chelsea and Bayern Munich have declared themselves to be out of the running in the race to sign the prolific striker. This limits Ronaldo’s options.
Atletico Madrid president, Enrique Cerezo, has publicly refuted the rumours, but Agbonlahor thinks Ronaldo won’t have any issues on joining a rival team and also brought Liverpool into the picture. In an interview with talkSPORT (h/t Liverpool Echo), the former Aston Villa striker said:
“Cristiano Ronaldo would join Liverpool this summer, if he could. They are big rivals of Man United but it’s about Ronaldo. He will go anywhere he can still play Champions League football, add to his record and win titles. I don’t think Ronaldo has any loyalty to United, Real Madrid or Juventus.”
The 37-year-old was unable to join Man United’s preseason trip to Thailand and Australia due to family reasons. However, this week, he returned to the UK and was spotted driving into the club’s Carrington training facility to begin his preseason.
He arrived with his agent Jorge Mendes, and it appears like the two would speak with manager Erik ten Hag. It has been claimed that Ronaldo reaffirmed his desire to leave Old Trafford as a free agent.
The 37-year-old would have asked United to reconsider its position, but they refused to let him go. According to the club, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner is not up for sale. Ronaldo would be in Ten Hag’s plans for the upcoming season, and the manager is looking forward to working with him.
