Liverpool midfield target rejects overtures from PL rivals

Liverpool target Matheus Nunes rejects Wolves offer 

According to Correio da Manha, via Paisley Gates (h/t the Mirror), Sporting CP’s Matheus Nunes has rejected an offer to join Wolverhampton Wanderers amidst interest from Liverpool. 

Liverpool’s recent scouting operations in Portugal have seen unheard-of success. Luis Diaz from FC Porto has given the team’s offensive line a whole new flair, and summer signing Darwin Nunez has everyone in awe with his recent preseason performance.

Since being promoted to the senior team in 2020, the young Sporting CP star has quickly gained recognition and is now one of the most sought-after midfielders in Europe. He would be a solid addition to the Reds’ roster.

Nunes, who made 33 league appearances last season and dazzled viewers with his work ethic and technical proficiency in the middle of the field, was amongst the league’s best players. Numerous clubs are interested in hiring him this summer as a result of his performances.

The midfielder has recently been heavily linked with the Reds. He appears to be the perfect alternative to Aurelien Tchouameni. The Frenchman was also linked with the Reds but eventually chose to join Real Madrid instead.

Wolves have raided the Portuguese league in the past but have faced rejection in the pursuit of Nunes. The midfielder has chosen against moving to The Molineux.

Liverpool could now be in the driver’s seat in the competition to sign the Portuguese international. With players like Thiago Alcantara, Jordan Henderson, and James Milner nearing the twilight of their respective careers, the Reds are in need of young midfield reinforcements.

The Reds have already signed Fabio Carvalho, who showed great promise throughout the preseason. The young man, a former Fulham player, helped ensure a convincing victory over RB Leipzig on Thursday by helping Darwin Nunez score four goals.

The strongest midfield trio for the Reds continues to be Fabinho, Thiago Alcantara, and Jordan Henderson. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain still has more to offer, with Milner and Naby Keita also available.

Liverpool are playing with fire by postponing their midfield spending until the summer of 2019. The fact that Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and James Milner are in the final year of their contracts further puts Jurgen Klopp under pressure.
